Germany will provide 52.5 million euros (about 724 crore taka) to Bangladesh for climate change adaptation efforts, the German Embassy said in a press release on Wednesday (April 16).
The announcement said that Economic Relations Division (ERD) Secretary Md. Shahriar Quader Siddiqui and German Ambassador to Bangladesh Achim Troster signed an agreement in this regard on behalf of the governments of the two countries today. Under this agreement, funds will be disbursed for the Climate Change Adapted Urban Development Program Project (VIII).
This is the first fund since the Joint Declaration of Intent (JDI) on the Bangladesh-German Climate and Development Partnership (CDP) was signed between the governments of the two countries in December 2024. The project under this fund will help strengthen the adaptive capacity of local government institutions and reduce risks by improving the quality of life of vulnerable populations affected by the effects of climate change.
The announcement further said that this fund will also support the implementation of climate-sensitive planning and infrastructure projects for climate adaptation.
These funds can also be used to complete German cooperation projects and for future projects.
