The country wants to ensure 40 percent renewable energy use by 2041.
Bangladesh will submit its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to the UNFCCC next year.
A bilateral meeting was held between Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury and Minister of State for Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid at the Secretariat yesterday.
Nations must prepare their next set of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), which outline their commitments and targets for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to climate change.
The submission deadline for these updated and more ambitious NDCs is at least 9-12 months before the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP 30), scheduled for November 2025 in Brazil.
Therefore, countries should aim to submit their new NDCs no later than February 2025, which is just two months after the deadline for submitting their Biennial Transparency Reports (BTRs).
By December 31, 2024, countries must submit their first Biennial Transparency Report (BTR) under the Paris Agreement’s Enhanced Transparency Framework. This report strengthens transparency in climate data and progress.
Ministers agreed that effective steps should be taken to ensure 40 percent renewable energy use by 2041.
The environment minister said that proper and sustainable plans should be adopted and implemented to increase the use of renewable energy and reduce emissions. For this purpose, coordination between both ministries will be strengthened.
In this process, setting emission targets for the power and energy sector is also mentioned as an important issue.
The meeting also discussed the implementation of the government’s master plan in the power and energy sector.
It is also informed that such meetings will continue from time to time to strengthen the cooperation and coordination of both ministries to achieve the country’s environment-friendly and sustainable development goals.
