BD: Flood destroys 30,000 electricity poles

Storms and floods have caused massive damage to power distribution systems.

30,000 electric poles were destroyed due to storms and floods in Bangladesh. All electricity substations have gone underwater due to floods in the Sylhet region. This information has been given by the Ministry of Electricity, Energy, and Mineral Resources of Bangladesh.

Recently there has been a power shortage in the country. Electricity is not being supplied to customers as per demand. In this regard, Minister of State for Electricity, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid said that the ‘Payra Power Plant’ has restarted production. A unit of India’s Adani Power Plant has been commissioned. It has increased the power supply. The supply will increase in two to three days. The situation will become normal.

As a condition of the loan, the IMF instructed Bangladesh to increase electricity prices four times a year. Because of this, the government has increased the price twice. When the IMF says to raise prices again, the Bangladesh government will raise prices again. There is anger and dissatisfaction with electricity prices at the consumer level.

Regarding the gas crisis, the state minister said that a floating LNG terminal was damaged due to the storm. The gas problem will be solved if the terminal supplies gas again on July 14 to 15.

Bangladesh government hopes that they will be able to eliminate the gas crisis by 2027. For this, they aim to construct two more floating LNG terminals. They also said that apart from this, initiatives have been taken to dig new wells on land and in the shallow sea.
