Bangladesh’s Agreement to Import Electricity from Nepal Next Month

State Minister for Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid said that the agreement to import electricity from Nepal may be signed by the end of next month (August).

The price of electricity imported from Nepal is 08 TK (0.068 USD) per unit. In the next twenty years, electricity can be imported at 08 TK per unit. The government says that if the price of fossil fuels goes up like the price of electricity goes up, that won’t happen here.

Electricity Generation from Renewable Energy in Bangladesh

Bangladesh has set a target of producing 10% of its total electricity generation through renewable energy. Currently, 26,000 MW of electricity is being generated in the country, out of which 2,600 MW of electricity is expected to come from renewable energy sources. But from there the country is getting only 500 to 600 MW.

The country’s government says the construction of a 2,500 MW power plant has been commissioned to increase power generation from renewable energy sources. Apart from this, another 6,000 MW is in the pipeline. The investment in this entire power generation process will come from the private sector.

The government of Bangladesh mentioned that by 2041, they have undertaken the goal of producing 10,000 MW of electricity from renewable energy. Discussions have been held with the World Bank for this. The World Bank wants to invest in some projects. The government will give them land. They will develop that land. At the same time grid lines will be constructed. After that, the government will call for tenders. This will further reduce the cost of solar power.

The country’s government hopes to add 6,000 MW of electricity from renewable energy to the national grid by 2025.
