Hydrogen Fuel: A New Energy Chapter for Bangladesh

Hydrogen Fuel:

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, Hydrogen fuel is an alternative energy carrier that holds promise for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It’s the most abundant element in the universe, but on Earth, it’s mostly found in water molecules.

Hydrogen itself doesn’t generate energy when burned, but it can be used in a fuel cell to create electricity through an electrochemical reaction with oxygen. This reaction only produces water vapor as a byproduct, making it a clean-burning fuel.

Hydrogen fuel is a promising option for a clean and sustainable future. With continued research and development, it has the potential to play a major role in reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.

Hydrogen Fuel in Bangladesh:

A plan to produce electricity from hydrogen and ammonia has been adopted in Bangladesh. The government organization “Rupantarita Prakritik Gas Company Limited (RPGCL)” has constituted a cell to collect the results of further studies and activities undertaken in the developed world on sustainable and reliable methods of production of “Hydrogen” as fuel. Which is supervised by Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Corporation (Petrobangla). The cell will formulate a project proposal on receipt of acceptable information.  

It is expected that by 2035 it will be possible to use hydrogen fuel experimentally in the country. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina presented such information in the parliament yesterday.  

Bangladesh has set a target of 40% electricity generation from clean or environmentally friendly energy by 2041. According to official data, the highest electricity generation so far is 8. 3% of electricity is being generated from renewable energy sources.  

More than 100 projects with a capacity of about 10,000 MW are in various stages of approval and implementation. If these projects are implemented by 2030, the Bangladesh government expects that the use of natural energy in electricity production will be reduced to a large extent.
